What is Solitaire and how does it work?

Solitaire is probably one of the most famous computer games ever and since its release with the Windows 3.0 operating system, it has provided for hours of entertainment in front of the computer in the office and at home. But Solitaire has its origin as a classic offline card game and is actually called „Patience“, which comes from the French and means „patiencia“.

It is said that the game was created in France at the time of the French Revolution. In Spanish speaking countries, however, the card game is widely known as Solitario and in the English-speaking world the term „Klondike Solitaire“ is widely used. In England, however, solitaire is known as Patience. For almost 30 years this exciting card game has delighted numerous Windows users and can here now be played online for free!

The goal of playing solitaire is to arrange all cards in a certain order on four piles. Before that, however, the cards must be uncovered and sorted. When sorting, the cards must be arranged in descending order by the king. The colours of the cards must alternate, there are seven rows available for sorting. Once all four stacks are formed in the correct order, the game is won. Here you can learn more about the rules of the game.

Solitaire Games

Ace-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10-jack-queen-king. This is the order in which the cards of each type must be placed on the empty spaces to win the game. No matter what format you prefer to play for free, you are free to choose. Choose between the classic version, the version with time limit, the game with double the number of cards or the version with the Windows XP look.

Solitaire Classic

With the free standard version have two levels of difficulty to choose from. If you choose the difficulty „1 card“, one card is always placed from the deck. If you choose the difficulty „3 cards“, three cards will always appear after clicking on the card pile. In addition to the elapsed playing time and the steps you have taken, you will also see your current score and the highest scores of past games. If you want to undo any moves, you can easily reset them by clicking the icon in the lower right corner. The goal of the classic version is to place all cards of one suit and the respective icon on the four blank ones in the correct order.



Windows XP Solitaire

If you like to indulge in old times, we can recommend the Windows XP version of Solitaire. This version is very faithful to the original of the old operating system. Also, here you have two levels of difficulty. The game in the Windows dress starts with the difficulty where you only have one card when you drop from the deck. If you wanted to have three cards, just click on „Share (3)“ in the white bar at the top. If you only want to receive one card from the deck, click on „Split (1)“. You cannot undo more than one step, but you can put a card from the deck that you brought into play back next to the deck. To do this, click on „Back“. An interesting feature of this free browser game is the ability to choose the design of the card deck. Simply click on „Deck“.



Solitaire Time Limit / Pyramid Solitaire

There is only one difficulty level for this version. This means that you can only take one card from the deck at a time. The difficulty of this game is to place all the cards in the correct order on the four empty spaces within six minutes. However, you can pause the game if something unexpected intervenes. Just click on the big green button in the bottom left corner. If you get stuck, you can restart the game in the same menu. It is also possible to undo the last steps.



Double Solitaire


Double Solitaire

In Double Solitaire there are again two levels of difficulty: „Draw 1 card“ and „Draw 3 cards“. As in the standard version, this means that you can either take one card or three cards from the deck. The challenge with this variant lies in the number of cards. As the name suggests, there are twice as many cards as in the standard version. This also means that there are twice as many free spaces on which to stack the cards. Therefore there are eight free spaces in total. If you want to undo a few moves, you can do so simply by clicking on the button in the bottom right corner. In the upper left corner you will get to the menu. There you can restart your current game or start a completely new game.


Spider Solitaire Games

The difference to Solitaire is that Spider Solitaire has no free spaces where the cards must be stacked in the correct order. The correct sorting or stacking already takes place in the ten card rows. Here you can play Spider Solitaire Classic, Spiderette, Triple Spider Solitaire online and for free.

Three levels of difficulty are available in this card game: 1 suit, 2 suits or 4 suits. If you choose „1 suit“, you will be dealt only cards of one type or color in ten rows. If you choose „2 suits“ you will be dealt cards of two different suits and if you choose „4 suits“ you will be dealt cards of four different suits. If you get stuck, you can see possible next steps by clicking on the light bulb at the bottom of the screen. As with the classic Solitaire version, you can undo moves you have made by clicking on the icon at the bottom right. You can pause the game using the cogwheel in the bottom left corner. You will also get to the menu where you can start a new game or restart the current game.



Spider Solitaire Beginners / Triple Spider Solitaire


Triple Spider Solitaire

If you are still struggling with Spider Solitaire, , this version is highly recommended. There is only one difficulty level. Cards of only one suit are lined up. If you get stuck at one point, you can view possible next steps. To do this, click on the light bulb at the bottom right. If you click on the button in the bottom right corner, you can undo your last steps. To get to the menu, click on the button with the three bars. Once you are in the menu, the game will be paused. You then have the choice of continuing the game or restarting it. You can also cancel the current game and start a completely new game.


Spider Solitaire Time / Spiderette

Before you can start the game, you have to decide on a difficulty level. Similar to the regular Spider game, you can choose the following difficulty levels: „Easy“, „Normal“ and „Difficult“. In the easy level there is only one card type/suit. You must also finish the game within ten minutes, otherwise you will automatically lose. At the medium difficulty level there are two card types/suits. The time limit here is twelve minutes. At the most difficult level the game can be solved with four card types/suits. You have 15 minutes time for this. Using the menu at the top left you can start a new game or restart the existing game. If you click on the card pile in the bottom right-hand corner, additional cards will be placed on each row.


Solitario Spider Nostalgia / Win XP Spider


Windows XP Spider Solitaire

In this version you also have four difficulty modes to choose from. If you choose „Easy“, the game can be solved with one suit of cards. If you choose „Normal“, you will be dealt cards of two suits. If you choose the professional mode, four different card types are placed on the playing field. You can undo your moves with the icon in the bottom right corner. If you click on the three bars in the upper left corner, the game will be paused. In addition, a menu will appear, which you can use to start a completely new game. If you wish, you can also simply restart the current game. You can also get to the menu mentioned above by clicking on the X in the lower left corner. This variant is particularly impressive because of its nostalgic wooden look and the worn out playing cards.


Freecell Games

The biggest difference between Freecell and Solitaire, as well asSpider Solitaire is that all cards of each type are face up from the beginning. So there is no deck to discard any additional cards from. In addition to the four free spaces already known from Classic Solitaire, there are four more spaces where you can store cards temporarily. Besides the standard version of Freecell, you can play a time-limited version for free. Additionally, you will find Baker’s Freecell / Nostalgia in a chic wooden look and Freecell in Windows XP design.

In Freecell you cannot choose different levels of difficulty, because at the beginning of the game all cards of each suit are already face up on the board. However, you have the option of undoing any moves you have made. Just click on the icon in the bottom right corner. In the lower left corner you can see a gear wheel. If you click on it, the game will be paused and you will get to the game menu. There you can start a new randomly selected game. If you have noted down the game number of a certain setup, you can also call up this compilation. But maybe you just want to restart the current game. You can also do this in the menu. You can also call up statistics on your game history.



Windows XP Freecell

In this Freecell version you see at the beginning briefly some fictitious information about the game in MS-DOS-optics. After that the Freecell game appears in the familiar Windows XP design. There is a separate game number for each card setup. This means that if a certain card constellation appeals to you, you can play it again and again. To do so, click on „Select game“ and enter the corresponding game number. If you would like to start a new game with a random card constellation, click on „New“ in the top margin. You can completely reset your current setup via „Restart“. You can also view statistics on your current game and all games played.



Double Freecell / Time limit

Ten minutes you have time to fill the four empty squares with cards of the respective type and in the correct order. If you fail to do this, you automatically lose. Since this is not challenging enough, you will not be able to take back your moves. But you can pause the current game for this. Just click on the bars in the upper left corner. There you will also get to the menu where you can start the current game again or have the game cards dealt out again. In the bar at the top you can see the number of moves you have made, your score and the time you have left.



Baker’s Freecell / Nostalgia

Particularly striking in this Freecell variant is the classic look with wooden elements and used playing cards. Here too, you must solve the game within ten minutes. However, you have the option of undoing the last steps of the game. Simply use the icon on the bottom right. You can pause the game by clicking on the three bars in the top left corner or the X in the bottom left corner. If you click on these icons, not only will you pause the game, you will also be taken to the game menu as usual. If your game is blocked or you just don’t know what to do, you can restart your current game or start a whole new game from the game menu.
